The adoption of cathode protection technology to delay the corrosion of steel structures has two main types: sacrificial anode cathode protection and applied current cathode protection. It is commonly used in buried areas to transport oil, natural gas pipelines, urban gas pipelines, and water pipelines. It can also be used for cathodic protection of steel structures in freshwater. 根據電化學原理，從鎂合金陽極材料體上通過土壤、水等電解質向被保護體如鋼質結構提供陰極電流，使被保護的鋼質結構進行陰極化，實現陰極保護。隨著電流的不斷流動，陽極材料不斷消耗掉。這就是犧牲陽極名稱的由來。 成套鎂犧牲陽極，由鎂犧牲陽極錠1支，一根VV-10㎜2電纜3米，填包料50kg，棉布口袋1條，塑料編織袋1條組成。即棉布口袋內有鎂犧牲陽極錠1支其鐵芯上焊VV-10㎜2電纜3米1根，焊接處做絕緣處理，并套有熱縮管。鎂犧牲陽極錠周圍均勻分布50kg填包料。棉布口袋外套塑料編織袋1條。  鎂犧牲陽極適用于在土壤、淡水及海水等介質中工作的鋼質設施的陰極保護。

腐蝕造成的后果嚴重的，不僅僅是浪費了金屬的資源，它使生產停頓、物料流失、降低產品質量、污染環境、延誤新技術的發展，甚至引起火災、塌毀等災難性是事故。

油氣田生產系統的腐蝕也十分嚴重。據不完全統計，至1992年底，中原油田已有100多口注水井套管腐蝕穿孔，400多口井的套管出現問題，并有30多口井因腐蝕而報廢。僅1992年中原油田375口注水井因腐蝕頻繁更換油管達1889T，損失資金2979萬元。
